Initial Concepts

During the initial design phase, to generate our concepts, we brainstormed and researched preexisting solutions individually and then met as a group to compare and generate more early concepts ideas. We initially wanted to create a design that would wrap a range of different sized gift boxes. However, after consulting several faculty members and running into a multitude of issues prototyping with handling different box dimensions, we decided to create a design that will wrap a single box size. Therefore, we agreed on changing the overall function of our design: to wrap a standard sized gift box in an effective, safe, and quick manner in order to eliminate the nuisance of wrapping gifts for small business and large household users.

Initial Proof of Concept

Above you can see the initial cardboard prototype of the folding mechanism, modeled in cardboard and manila folders. We used this in order to see how well the initial folding plate designs we thought of could work to fold paper. As seen in the video, it is fairly effective in creating a well wrapped gift with some snagging and catching on the edges. These edges will be much smoother in our final acrylic prototype but the overall design will be similar.
